Chanelle Ruffin, a 39-year-old from Camden, South Carolina, actively volunteers at a women’s shelter in her community. She enjoys attending live concerts, open-mic nights, and trying new foods.

This past summer, Chanelle suffered a fracture in her right leg, which required a metal plate. Her healing became complicated by a wound and infection, which led to a below-the-knee amputation.

After initial treatment at an acute care hospital, Chanelle chose to receive specialized rehabilitative care at Midlands Regional Rehabilitation Hospital (MRRH) based upon a recommendation from her dialysis nurse. Chanelle also liked the hospital’s convenient location and the availability of private rooms.

When Chanelle arrived MRRH, she worked closely with the hospital’s interdisciplinary healthcare team, who developed a customized treatment plan to enhance recovery and minimize functional disability.

During her 20-day stay, Chanelle received physical therapy to regain strength and mobility, and occupational therapy to learn adaptive daily living skills like bathing, dressing, and toileting.

A few months later, Chanelle returned to MRRH after receiving a prosthetic leg. The hospital’s healthcare team provided prosthetic training that included exercise, mobility training, proper positioning, and education. After 18 days, Chanelle regained her independence and was discharged home.

“I’m looking forward to resuming my volunteer work, and I now want to get a labrador puppy,” Chanelle says.
